The grid has always played a fundamental role in graphic design and typography. It's been excessively used or completely ignored over the history of design. I found a really good podcast on Josef Muller-Brockmann's Grid Systems in Graphic Design and everyone should have a listen at this. Wish I could post the direct sound file here, but I don't know how.
