Banana cHiquita muy rica y bonita

As a kid I was a big fan of the old looney toons. I would watch the animal filled world for hours. For some reason I was allways fascinated by Carmen Miranda's costumes and how many times they personified her in this cartoons. There was an episode that specifically hanged on to me for years and I've never been able to know which one it was, but I did remember the glamour of the Hollywood biz and how she was one of the many personalities animated in that episode. Luckily in an afternoon of boredness at work and with a boss who apparently is very well referenced in this type of toons, from question to question and search to search, finally found the episode. What does it contribute to this blog? Nothing else than just piling stuff so I'll remember 'em.

Here is the Episode... Enjoy

The new James Jean? This artist from Brazil now does the cover art for the Fables comic. The first time I saw the new covers I thought it was by James Jean, until I got kinda curious and found out that he matches the style surprisingly similar. Still love how he draws and I'm looking forward to the next issues of Fables.

EAP Paro 48 Horas

The following images are from the strike at EAP during nights. I couldn't be there in the morning cause of work, but as soon as I got off work went straight to San Juan. You can see the complete album on facebook. Enjoy and support the arts!

"Los pueblos que no escuchan los reclamos de sus estudiantes corren el peligro de quedarse sin futuro. La ciudadanía estudiantil es la que custodia el fuego sagrado de la esperanza de los pueblos, y la guardan con su arrojo, con su temeridad, con su inviolable capacidad de soñar." EDUARDO GALIANO

"No podemos permitirlo. Puerto Rico no puede permitirlo. El país necesita un espacio y un proyecto como la EAP, perderlo, dejarlo perder, sería un golpe mortal a las artes."
Rosario Romero Escribano

EAP

On Monday La Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Puerto Rico, will be going on a academic strike for 48 hours. The cause of this is that every year the government funds are being cut to such an extent that the school reaches a 89% total cut. Now tell me, which college, institute or school can run with an 11% budget. That's unheard of right??!? So, anyone who wants to show their support can go to the strike on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18. I feel obliged to speak about this, cause I'm a graduate from the school and have many many friends who are either finishing or in the middle of their BFA. Let's help preserve the culture and arts of this island. For more details, you can go to cultura7.org and be informed on everything you need to know about this matter.

Below I leave you with a video of Rick Morgan, JJ Contreras and Suit Papi Melaza. You may remember them from the AWF event. But this time They're here to show there support to EAP. DO IT!!!

my sketch book

At work we have some times in the day where there's nothing to do.
In those moments, the sketch book becomes my source of entertainment
and for a few moments a brief rest for my eyes.
Enjoy!

all naff

Today I received an article that talks about the branding machine whore and how marketing, and now with viral publicity, expose us constantly to the bad taste routine that the masses so desperately want.
Below a few quotes from the article, you can read it here.
"For the record, my top 4 marketing naff list is:
  1. Consumer generated content, otherwise known as a promotion or cheap stunt. Otherwise known as a bribe for eyeballs.
  2. Viral films. It’s not a film it’s an ad. Calling it a film doesn’t make it any more effective.
  3. Branded content. A long ad.
  4. Online magazines. It’s not a magazine. It’s a cut and paste sales brochure or another blog banging on about Lady Gaga.

In an online world dominated by fast and free mediocrity, the purpose and role of a brand is more important that ever. And while the decision to charge or not to charge is still uncharted territory, is not charging a sign of insecurity about what makes one brands output better than another? And I purposefully mean better not different. That line on a creative brief that says, ‘What makes the brand different?’ It should read ‘What makes the brand better.’

Can we please move on from the online democracy age (the hall of naff), and into an era of online quality and closed walls (‘gasp, stone her!’ they cried), where discerning people value the extra-ordinary and the only thing that is democratic, is that quality gets a meaningful paycheck. There’s a reason why HBO is consistently brilliant and why the BBC is the most revered news and entertainment media brand in the world. People pay for it."

its not mia mi

I've always been a fan of MIA. Recently with all the controversy with her new video "Born Free', she's been getting all the hype you can imagine. The video left me with a blank stare on my face, but the pic below reinstate my faith that better things are coming our way.

Vanity hell

Sometimes I play too much with my camera and most of my work gets stuck in my hard drive to never see the light of day. This pic I wanted to post for quite a long time. After bringing it back from the dust, finally finished it with a few final touches and made It's way here.

Beach House

Beach House was one of my favorite artists at Coachella. The French-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally did a great show with beautiful live music and awesome hair flipping from the tunes that Victoria dropped on the piano. They played songs from all the albums, but my heart dropped when they started playing "used to be', my fav. Here are a few pics and a video I captured from the show.

CUBATRON

Coachella had many pieces that lighted up at night and were awesome. One of the most impressive was Cubatron:

Created by Mark Lotter, the Cubatron is “a 3D LED light sculpture. It consists of 5 Modular Cubatron arranged in a rectangle 8×40 feet wide and 13 ft high. Each Modular Cubatron is made up of 1000 lights within an 8×8x8ft open aluminum frame. They sit on top of a 5ft high steel pipe platform. People can view from any direction or crawl underneath.” Each light is individually controllable by computer to any color and brightness level. (Thanks to Mr. Lotter for that explanation!) Needless to say, the Cubatron is visually stunning, and also a ton of fun for festival-goers to explore. I love it because it’s beautiful and interactive, and allows you to create a peaceful, reflective moment in your otherwise jam-packed, hectic day spent bouncing from concert to concert. And, of course, the Cubatron couldn’t exist without the wonderful technology of LED lights. Because of their lightweight and energy-efficient nature, Lotter was able to use LEDs to put together a sculpture that is relatively easy to set up and store, and doesn’t use a lot of power, all of which Coachella appreciates, I’m sure. If you get a chance to go to Coachella this year, be sure to keep an eye out for the Cubatron…you’ll be glad you did!(elementalled)
The only difference this year, was that you couldn't crawl underneath the gigantic ball of lights. It had a fence and people were sitting around the piece. It would have been awesome to actually lay down beneath those lights. Hope next year they'll get rid of the fence!.

tatoos

In Coachella you see so many variety of tattoos, that you just can't keep track of how many people are inked there. The best about it all, is the randomness and the balls some of the people have to show the random things they get tattooed.

MELABO

Searching for random things on etsy, I stumbled some animal ceramic figures. This animal figures are a curious bunch, some are antelope dressed in gowns and others are matchmaking unicorns with humans. Looking at the position that some of this are made, I can guess there is an intention for them to be placed on top of frosted wedding cake. Still, I would collect this half-animal-half human figures instead of showing them off on a white gown a top a cake.

There is small interview this artist made for etsy. Hope you enjoy!

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, affiliations, personal stuff).

"Melabo" was created by combining the first two letters of my first, middle and last name... Megan Lalli Bogonovich. I live in an apartment in Concord, New Hampshire with my boyfriend Chuck. I've been to art school and graduate school and collected those degrees. Now, I teach at the community college in town, but luckily the semester is over. So, for the summer my brain and hands belong to me. My routine consists of walking to my studio, getting my coffee and bagel on the way, and then settling in to make stuff. My studio is upstairs in a little yellow building that used to be a barn. It's open and sunny and comfortable.

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

I grew up in Vermont and more than making drawings as a kid, I remember going outside and re-organizing nature. Tidying up. Collecting bits in piles. Finding places to install bark roofs. Getting a little red knife was a big deal at one point. My brother was expert at cutting paths, so we explored outdoor places. We lived across the street from an artsy college and I remember that we used to bump into outdoor installations on a regular basis. A door in the middle of the woods, big clay mushrooms that would be filling a field one day and gone the next, old metal desks welded together to make a huge frog with an open mouth. Kind of an interesting way for a kid to be exposed to are... experimental and without museum formality.

What inspires you? Where do your ideas come from?

I like to travel. I like to look at things. I like to make associations. I watch people. I like the pieces I sell on etsy to be fun and approachable. The larger scale sculptural pieces that I make in my studio often influence the etsy pieces. And vice versa.

Make it snow cherry!!!!!

Recently you may have noticed my endless ramblings and recent art posts all related with candy made worlds, cotton clouds and neon animals. Seeing the movie
Cloudy with a chance of Meatball made me fantasies about it even more. The ice cream town scene from the movie blew me away.

With that in mind, Yamil Medina created "Strawberry's my Favorite" for an art benefit that unites the best of both worlds(candy and animals). The piece will be auctioned to help fund disaster relief efforts in various parts of the world such as Haiti. 100% of profits will be donated to Hope Force International (HFI). If you want to contribute to this benefit the
facebook page has all the info you will need.

Pa sSion Pi t

I've had a few bands where i've heard a song and liked it, but eventually forgotten it by some sort of stupid add thing. It kinda happened to me with passion pit. I've already heard sleepyhead and the reeling, but didn't recognize them until actually doing a band research for the festival

So when one of the songs got into my head and I recognized it from long ago, they immediately made the list for the must see bands and it was waaaaaaaay better than expected. They may not have hyped up visuals like muse, but they really know how to play live. Below a video and pictures from the festival and a music video of them that made me want to get in the screen.
