Valentine's thing was yesterday and picking some groceries I came across a delicate piece of art. Wine and a heart made of meat. I really think the people who did this didn't think it entirely through. The heart IS actually a muscle, so when eating this lovely meat, remember... you ARE eating a heart. A creepy feast for any romantic monster tale.

So this folks are making a awesome Valentine's edition. The cakes are a bit bigger than a cupcake but much smaller than a full size cake, a perfect bite size. Double cake has collaborated for this special ED with 5 artist, including myself. Each one made there own simple version of the this perfect capitalist holiday. This V-Day stop giving money to Wallgreens and buy something creative, new, fresh and something made by locals with love and care.

I will keep you guys posted when I get the live picture of my cake. :D

This Christmas I went on a toy spree between my bf and me, where we became obsessed with Amanda Visell's kidrobot series "TicToc". Amanda is an artist from LA, she paints, sculpts amazing creatures and beast and brings them to life.

Amanda Visell lives in Los Angeles area by choice. She paints cartoony pictures and makes things. She did not go to school for this. Her artwork can be seen in galleries and museums nationwide including an exhibit and exclusive merchandise line at Disneyland USA. She continues to create original artwork along with toys, books, apparel, limited edition prints and sculptures, all while perfecting her design for the ultimate home robot.

I love giving gifts, love doing research on the person and coming up with a joke or something personal. This year in a gift exchange i got a friend who is currently doing a masters in Design history in DC. Like me, he loves design. So I decided to make him a book about him. The book is constructed entirely by hand and all illustrations were inspired by inside jokes, things he hates and likes. He is also a chair freak, and by that I mean furniture made by top designers in the field in the 20th century. Below are pictures form the book and the gift giving party. Enjoy!

I've recently became aqquainted with the work of Jessica Eaton. As you may know I have a thing for light and colors and prisms, Her work is in experimentation of technical and conceptual beauty. In her latest Cubes "For Albers and Lewitt" she focuses on the "discrepancy between physical fact and psychic effect," Eaton's images add "multiple exposures and colored lights" to plain, monochromatic cubes to create enchanting graphics. With a 4x5 camera, she starts with white, black and gray cubes, then shoots them under red, green and blue gels to capture the amazing colors we see here. Her only inspires me more to dewll in this field of experimental photography. You can check her tumblr and stuff she likes.

“Her work explores what photography is and can be, looking at the themes of light, time and spatial relations. Creating images of geometry and colour that play with the viewers perceptions, all Eaton’s images are created in-camera. No post at all. Which is pretty impressive, especially with the photographs toward the bottom of this page – undoubted homages to Josef Albers and Victor Vasarely - a couple of which look almost entirely computer-generated. The experimental colour photographic work of James Welling seems to have spurred a generation of young photographers to experiment with what can be achieved with the medium, and Eaton is pushing things in an interesting direction, along with peers such as Caleb Charland and Niall McClelland. When she works, she has no clear defined final image in mind when she begins each series, instead setting out with an idea of what the outcome may be, but going with the flow. As she says, “each time I shoot, the results influence the next step. I often like to leave a lot of space for accidents to happen and am most satisfied with the work when it takes on a life of its own.” It seems that she is only just beginning to touch on what can be achieved, and we’re going to watch her evolution with interest.” – via Field of Vision

A friendly stroll through San Juan one afternoon led to bump into Francisco Rullan who was at the doorstep of his gallery, Roberto Paradise. He invited us in to see the latest exhibit by Chaveli Sifre. The space of this gallery is very well used. An open space with a lot of tinted windows that creates a relaxed feeling from the hectic city, noise and cars. I posted a few pictured from my visit to the gallery, hope you guys enjoy!

VENTURA Vol1

Ventura is a book created by Steven Rice, where artist from Puerto Rico collab in this great book. The dynamic of Ventura starts with an artist writing about something. Then that essay or poem or critic is given to an illustrator and he turns it into an image. Theeen, this illustration done by this artist goes to another writer that speaks through pen and pencil about this illustration and so on. It' a really fun dynamic and being a part of it, I can tell you it's a ton of fun. The process of the book is quite funny, cause you see how from page to page each interpretation transforms the whole idea into something else. If you want to understand better this great concept I suggest you take a look yourself!!! Visit the book here, like it here and get to see behind the scenes and sketches here! Here's her bio:

Alenka Sottler (b. 1958, Slovenia) was born into a creative family and began her art practice early on, as a child by the side of her father, an academic sculptor. Later she pursued her formal university education in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, at both graduate and postgraduate levels.

A prolific author, she has illustrated more than forty books for children and adults. She has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious national and international awards, and has exhibited widely at home as well as abroad.

I asked Alenka to describe her technique:

Essential for my creative process is the ability to use extreme simplification, which opens up surprising worlds and a space for creative play. I am lead by the joy of discovering the new, a respect for the material and its nature.

I produce seemingly extremely complex visual forms in an astoundingly simple manner. In my drawings I behave like someone who partakes in nature’s processes. I find an interesting abstract structure. I grasp its visual essence and its hidden logic. I add to it with its own laws of growth.

For example: What a beautiful trace a metal comb makes if you pull it across some fresh black paint on white paper. I understand that the strong impression is created by the multitude of parallel thin black and white lines, which wind across the surface of the paper. In this abstract space I see the scene. Using a brush, that creates the same fine lines in black or white paint, I add to the structure..., which then grows into a new organism—an illustration, and eventually into a book, perhaps. I begin from any kind of structure—see my letter illustrations for instance. In this process, I am influenced by the concept of evo-devo evolutionary developmental biology which is concerned with the formation of organisms. Recent discoveries bring to the visual world totally new dimensions and relationships between the large and the small. I see the world as a universe of giant forms, constructed from an endless amount of repetitious identical particles, rebuilt with the same meticulousness as the large ones, and I draw these through my illustration.

This book. This cover. This story. Of 600+pages, the intricate work that has gone in illustrating each page of this book, is very ambitious and beautiful. Although the author, Craig Thompson, has take on this tasks before, In his very well known graphic novel blankets. THe construction of the book in itself it's very well done, from a hardcover filled with gold leaf that interprets the time and place of the story. Sometimes the narration or the dialog in the text is a bit hard to swallow, but it picks up from that to continue a well written fable. I read it in one night sitting, now I'm going to look at the drawings with more detail.

One of the most recognized duo in the art world, Allora & Calzadilla have worked and lived the puertorican air for quite a while. Recently they were honored in the venecian biennal. After that accomplishment, they were recognized here in Puerto Rico for what they've contributed in the art community. An activity organized by MAPR, who needed many photographers to cover the event for press and I got to be one of the lucky photographers to not only cover the event, but meet the artists in person. Book of the day

Calvin and Hobbes is one of my fav books after Mafalda. Although both have many similarities Mafalda's more political and humanitarian approach makes her a powerhouse of human rights, while calvin depicts his insatisfaction with art and an ongoing existential questioning. Bill Watterson's creation, reminds you of the contrast of innocence and the twist of evil kids sometimes have. Hobbes is the best friend anyone (including adults) can have. Functioning not only as his imaginary friend, but as his voice of conscience. This comic strip reminds me so much of how important it's to have fun and preserve the innocence that once we had as kids.

In our short stay at San francisco 3 of us went out to the streets hungry for art murals. We not only found many great ones, but bumped into a massive mural that had a Jeremy Fish corner installation. The sculpture celebrated the 20 year anniversary of the infamous Silly Pink Bunny gang, that took place this past april (easter). I was sooooo excited to have seen this collaboration, a stunning large scale work of art in our time in the city.

I've really found joy out of taking pictures from an airplane. It kinda calms me down, specially sense I've got a bit of a fear of flying ( although I think I handled it better this time around). To look at all the amazing scenery and presence a different kind of land. Photographing the earth from another perspective, from a tiny confined flying box. It is great pleasure.

Continuing yesterdays post, I've always has ideas to make embroidery and I've seen in a few sites with this link to a wonderful pdf book calledA Handbook of Lettering for Stitchers by Elsie Svennas. Maybe I can figure out how to make a few letters.

"A real treat for stitchers and lovers of lettering! From the inside cover flap: "The Author has set out in this book with three distinct aims. Firstly to write a concise history of Lettering, tracing the development from the simplest markings to the elaborate and decorative monogram. Secondly, to give an an illustrated dictionary of all stitches that are suitable for carrying out any lettering. Finally to display in an illustrated section the great variety of lettering designs suitable for various stitches using every letter of the alphabet as examples."

I'm pretty sure I've written about this Twin-sister tag-team designers before. They never stop creating amazing things. Their typography embroidery, the detail they put into one piece of work is what makes them unique. Up at 10 ASWERS the sisters did a really fun interview I though you

guys might enjoy.

1. How would you describe your work in three words?
Intricately textured visuals.

2. Who is your creative role model?
Neil Gaiman, he’s not a designer, but a writer. We wish we were as witty and could weave imaginative stories like his.

3. If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Cook. Or read a book, preferably outdoors away from our workspace.

4. What place in the world most inspires you and why?
It’s hard to pin point one particular place, London is amazing and there are so many things happening here it’s hard to keep up. But a trip to Tokyo played a major part in our decision to establish MaricorMaricar and started us off on the journey we’re on now. The creative energy of the city inspired us to pick up a pencil/brush/needle again and get our hands dirty making things away from the computer.

5. If you could do a different job for a day what would it be and why?
A food critic, I’d love to be able to travel to sample world’s best restaurants.

6. What is your favorite homemade gift to give?
Mixtapes.

7. What is your favorite object in your home?
We left most of our things back in Australia so our flat felt really sterile like a hotel for a while. We found a colourful knitted throw at a market and it instantly made our place feel like home so that’s my favourite object right now. It’s crazily coloured and patterned.

8. What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
You get nothing without asking. Oh and that it’s all about the percentages so be persistent. I read somewhere that a 10% response rate (positive and negative) is normal when you send out cvs/portfolios etc. You have to be prepared for a lot of knock backs, but it’s not personal.

9. What websites do you use for inspiration?
Synaptic Stimuli, But Does it Float, Twitter.

10. When do you consider a piece of your work complete?
With our embroideries we’ll start a piece and worry that the colours aren’t working together, but we’ve learnt to resist the urge to unpick everything and just continue adding the rest of the colours and eventually the combinations start to sing. When that happens in a project it feels like everything just clicks into place and all the pieces you’ve been struggling with all knit together. It might not be finished yet, but I know it will work.

THis serie is a real inspiration. How they played with the pages and stepped outside of the box( or pages) to great something wonderful more than 50 years ago. The first issue was first published in 1963.

"The Imagination series ran from 1963 to 1986 and produced twenty-six issues. I’ve managed to save twenty-three of them (above) and I think they were the ultimate paper samples. Each issue chose a subject and explored it with illustrations, graphics and printing techniques on various Champion papers. After issue fifteen on Scandinavia they got ever more elaborate with foldouts, additional booklets and envelopes with pull-outs."

Exquisite execution, great colour scheme and incredible taste was part of what Mathew Dupuis combined when he designed Miss Universe.

“This design is a re-imagining of Vanity Fair cover from the early 1900’s. The original image featured a woman in a red and white polka-a-dot dress strangely twirling and manipulating a piece of rope. I’ve always loved the original designs balance of simplicity and complexity but also wondered what it would look like if it was outer-space themed.”

She reminds me a bit to liliana porter, but no to artist are the same. Rebecca Wilson takes familiar objects, or the one's in your grandma's house and alters the perception with the material or scale situation and makes the viewer question the value of the once familiar item.

This particular collection focuses on perfume bottles and ceramic figures merged in one.

"Tacky collectible perfume bottles are referenced in the ‘Blow Me’ collection. These pieces show a new direction in my work, and the introduction of a new material and set of processes. A collection of slipcast and stained porcelain figurative ‘bottles’ is complimented by a number that are cast in solid glass in delicious colours to highlight the redundancy of their primary function. These objects have become marginalised from their intended purpose as decanters of sickly scents, and now stand redundant in function, but rich in purpose as covetable ‘collectibles’. The non-functional glass and porcelain pieces are finished off with delicately knitted atomiser bulbs salvaged from vintage perfume bottles. The patina comes from of years of being squeezed by greasy fingers and the disfigured and perished rubber interiors further allude to the now redundant function."
